Any event of this nature is a joint effort, every participant is as important as anyone else, no matter if you organise it, command it, take part in it, support it, whatever, that's the way I work and always will.

So, if you have any ideas or suggestions, or thing you want to do, see, etc., please let everyone know, it/they will be considered, the basic formula and modus operandi of the event works well, or has so far, but there is always room for new ideas, they may not be possible, or practical, but if you don't say, no one knows, and everyone has a voice

Because I'm slightly soft in the head, I quite fancy walking across north west Europe with my mk 1 bren over my shoulder, is anybody else planning to do this? Can't have 75% of the marchers with Brens as it'll look a bit odd! Is this ok with admin? Need to know before I sew on my LG badge.

Trust me, you will be one of the very, very, err, ..................very few with a Bren, and in any event, as you mentioned it first, you get first refusal, as is right, fair and proper

Without saying suck, granny, eggs, it's full MkI spec ? handle, butt strap, dovetail ?

All of the specifications are on the uniform regs if required...

We didn't have a Bren last time.

The other requirement would be the early model of Bren mags... Though I suppose you'd only need the one on the Gun to be the early type. Ones in pouches etc could be the later ones... The early ones are quite rare...

Bren is full mk1 dovetail spec and has the mk1 magazine so all good there, unlike the mk1m in the film! Lol

I have a Mark 1, as well as a Boys rifle, but getting them through customs could be a bit dodgy. I'll have to stick with the good old No1 MkIII. It would be great to see someone with a Bren this time, so please bring it.

If you need help carrying it, especially uphill, Jon said he would love to.  Laughing

I think a Bren ( or two ) will be excellent, They will be passed around a bit I expect as the rear ones ( and the Dunkirk film ) one was, so between us, it's a go I think

Now, who is carrying a Vickers ?

a) do people want a day off in the middle ?

b) do you want to stick to the same basic route as previous trips

c) do you want to walk part of one night - would have to be cross country for safety

In response to:

(A) it might be nice to relax and have a few beers somewhere like Cassell but the issue might be getting going again...? Anything you had in mind for the day off?

(B) the more we could do off the metalled roads the better I reckon but that might be easier said than done. I'm sure that old factory is still there... The bunker at Cassell was excellent but I'm wondering if its completely surrounded now by that industrial estate that was being built... The restaurant and barn was a brilliant night!

(C) night moves might make it nice to rest through the day and be warm and sweat less at night in the cool... I'd be all for that weather permitting... Possibly more 'authentic' (?) with night moves but less opportunity to meet an approving public and fill water bottles etc... If it pisses it down cross country will make matters worse...

I'll remain open minded though. The last trip was brilliant.

Another thought,

Rather than have all the hassle of packing everyone into the transport to visit the Wormhoudt Massacre site, I suggest we approach it up secondary roads, and field tracks from Cassel, rather than go up the main road and then from town square and back ?

Food and cooking

I know we used the gas burner set up last time. What would people think about a Soyer burner and a cook to do the food authentically?

I have no objection at all, the gas burner was pretty inefficient actually

Do we know anyone who would want to be part of the march but is to old/knackered to march it? We can offer them the chance to turn cook so that there is a brew and stew whenever we stop for the night. Then thay can join in for the bits of the march they want to.
Not to much to knacker them but still an invaluable member of the team.

Bren, bring it is it's right but we'll make sure it;s handed round. Trust me with a break and a bit longer time wise to do the route it will be easier, but this aint a stroll in the park so team working is the key. As long as we have a maximum Bren per 15 men we should be ok but any more than that it's going to get silly.

As for route, yes from cassell to the massacre site, then back to the route again. it's a bt longer but hell we have an extra day now.
